About us

Blake and Cathy Miller are your instructors.  Both have been actively involved in the outdoors as hunters, backpackers and fishermen.  They are 20 year Navy veterans with backgrounds in navigation.  Since 1998, Blake and Cathy have taught classes to personnel in the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, local law enforcement, Search and Rescue Teams, wild land firefighters and Smoke Jumpers, hunters, hikers, skiers, fishermen and equestrians.    This fall Blake will teach a land navigation class for Central Oregon Community College's Forestry 230 class.   He also teaches at several Community College’s  for the continuing education program around the state.  He writes a monthly column on land navigation for the online magazine www.seattlebackpackersmagazine.com .  

The GPS class offered by the Millers covers the basics of GPS navigation, screen presentations and the many functions of handheld systems.   A principle objective of the class is for the student to confidently use their GPS receiver to safely find their way in and out of the wilderness.  Survival classes teach the basics of backcountry travel preparation, gear and clothing selections using modern equipment and technology. 

The Miller's are heavily involved within the community.  Cathy is a Director on the local School Board, a volunteer in several programs dealing with substance abuse prevention, and was a Hunter Education Instructor for almost ten years.  Blake is a former member of the Board of Directors of the local park district, a youth soccer coach, a mentor for high school students and is a current  member of his local Search and Rescue organization.

The Millers reside in the Pacific Northwest's high mountain desert region of Oregon and are the parents of three sons.
